Preferred shares

Friend of mine told me about this fund that include bunch of preferred shares I see it as a blend of bonds and stocks. These preferred shares pay higher dividends than the common shares and the shareholder get the divedends before all other shareholders. There is another advantage related to companies liquidates, preferred shareholders will get money before the common shareholder (but after the bonds holders). One disadvantage to keet these shares or related funds is the fact that they have low volume.
The fund PGX http://finance.google.com/finance?q=NYSE:PGX has been launched at the begining of 2008 and had major drop in the last year and mostly since September so it seems to be pretty much atractive now.
